Bourbon Street Shoe

"I bet you got your shoes on Bourbon Street."

"Best place for 'em," I said, and kept right on walking.

There were plenty of beautiful women in this town, and I'd managed to read her beads in a single glance.

Every shoe tells a story — When I first moved to New Orleans, I asked around to see if there were any special shoes associated with the city. Every single person I asked said, "I bet you got your shoes on Bourbon Street!". Here's the story: A panhandler comes up to a tourist on Bourbon St. in the French Quarter and says, "I bet you five dollars I know where you got them shoes!" The tourist puts in his fiver, figuring since he's from out of town the beggar has no way of knowing the answer. The panhandler grabs both fives and shouts with glee, "You got your shoes on Bourbon Street!" Walk through the Quarter on any given day looking like a tourist and you'll hear it for yourself.

This is one of the few I wouldn't mind seeing made in real life. Maybe I'll paint some real shoes for Jim to wear on Mardi Gras Day!

It would be easy to be inspired solely by all things New Orleans, as so many other artists are. I try to keep a balance.
