"That smells delicious."
I chuckled, ever the cynic. "The food, or my desperation?"
She'd agreed to meet me at the club for a quick bite. She was everything to me, and I'd spent hours trying to make it look like I thought it was just a casual lunch.
"What's eating you?"
"It's no picnic being sandwiched between your other dates," I blurted. Why hadn't I spent some of my prep time rehearsing things to say that wouldn't sound like I'd come here to chew her out?
"I think you might be trying too hard."
"Trying too hard? That's really hitting below the blt."
What was I doing? I had to get my foot out of my mouth, or I'd be toast.

Every shoe tells a story — I got so wrapped up in the food puns that I forgot all about commenting on the lira in the penny loafer. You figure it out. (Something about Italian dressing, perhaps?)
